Augustus Gloop is one of the four main antagonists (alongside Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde and Mike Teavee) in the 1964 Roald Dahl novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and its movie adaptations. He is an obese, greedy and gluttonous young boy who spends his days eating all the time. He was the first child to find a golden ticket and to meet his "downfall" in the factory.

In the 1971 film, he was portrayed by Michael Bollner. In the 2005 film, he was portrayed by Philip Wiegratz. In Tom and Jerry film, he is voiced by Rachel Butera.

Biography

1971

In Germany, Augustus was first seen being interviewed while he's eating his meal with his parents at the restaurant. The broadcaster asked Augustus how does it feel to be the first golden ticket finder and Augustus replied that he's hungry. The broadcaster also asked him if he has any other feelings Augustus replied that he felt sorry for Willy Wonka and it's going to cost him a fortune in fudge. Then, he is whispered to by Slugworth, who is disguised as a waiter serving sausage.

Augustus is next seen in the crowd outside of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory he eats a donut and his mother takes it away telling him to save some room for later. He's greeted by Willy Wonka while entering the gale among with his mother.

He is seen signing the contract and he gives the pen to Charlie Bucket. In the dead-end hallway, he is seen getting crowded among with the others, Before they enter the chocolate room, Augustus exclaimed, "Let me in! I'm starving!" Willy Wonka tells him not to get overexcited. When they all enter the chocolate room, he is seen looking at the room with awe.

Augustus is seen eating fruit like candies and then he is drinking the chocolate river and his mother walks up to him telling to save some room for later. Then Willy Wonka tells Augustus not to do that because his chocolate must never be touched by human hands he even he tried to get him to stop. But then Augustus falls into the chocolate river and he begs for help. Charlie tries to rescue Augustus using a giant lollipop for the latter to hold and be pulled out but he sinks into the river. He is sucked up into the pipe that leads him to the fudge room.

He is never seen again afterwards, but he was mentioned by Charlie when he asked Willy Wonka what happens to him, Violet, and Veruca, and Willy Wonka replied that all three of them will be restored to their terrible old selves.

2005

Augustus appears for the first time as he is interviewed and tells how he discovered the Golden Ticket in his Wonka Bar;he accidentally biting off and nearly swallowing one of the ticket's corners. Later he appears reading the instructions and is very happy after reading about being escorted home by a possession of large trucks each one filled with all the chocolate he could ever eat.

He was aloof and cruel toward Charlie in the one instance when they interact, as Augustus offered him a Wonka Bar as they are walking towards the entrance to the Chocolate Room and then retracts it, telling Charlie he should have brought one of his own.

When told by Wonka to "enjoy" the Chocolate Room, Augustus began to gorge himself on the room's various contents before moving on to the chocolate river, ignoring his mother's subsequent protests and Wonka's warning that the liquid chocolate must not be touched by human hands. Augustus soon lost his balance and fell into the river, and was sucked out by the extraction pipe and whizzed off to the "Boiler Room." He was also heavier in this film.

While his physical stature was relatively unchanged after his journey into the Boiler Room, he is partially covered in chocolate, which he eats off himself as he leaves the factory, much to his mother's consternation.

He eats so many candy bars a day...that it was not possible for him not to find one.	„

Trivia

In the book, Augustus has become thin due to being stuck in the pipe. However, he still remains the same weight in the movie.
Philip Wiegratz Augustus' actor in the 2005 film,wore a fat suit during the production of the Tim Burton's movie in order to resemble the character.
