The Neomorphs are titular major antagonists in Alien: Covenant. They are a byproduct of Chemical A0-3959X.91 – 15 contamination at Planet 4 ecosystem masterminded by David 8.

Characteristics

Neomorphs are presumably a precursor species of the Xenomorphs created and experimented on by David 8 via Chemical A0-3959X.91 – 15 alongside Deacon and Praetomorphs, though the latter two were much closer in relation.

In terms of behavior, Neomorphs are much more feral, animalistic, and aggressive even while just gestated from a host. Whereas chestbursters immediately flee upon emergence, newborn Neomorphs will maul nearby living beings with reckless abandon and great ferocity that even a squad of armed veteran soldiers have a hard time fighting one. Although their intelligence proved subpar in comparison of Xenomorphs, Neomorphs are just adept when it comes about stealth tactics to complement aforementioned recklessness. A specimen who managed to grow into adulthood before being unceremoniously killed by Oram was shown standing up and regarding David 8 with curiousity upon sensing his synthetic nature despite his outwardly human appearance, which was interesting as its late siblings bit off the arm of another synthetic Walter during the chaotic confrontation at Planet 4's wheat field and Xenomorphs frequently attacked synthetics.

David 8 explained that among purposes of Chemical A0-3959X.91 – 15 was to give rise of hybrid creatures which would instinctively hunt down and kill all non-botanical, animal life in an ecosystem — "the meat". This fits greatly to Neomorphs which frequently seen to attack their preys to feed indicating the need of flesh to survive as well as aforementioned hesitation to attack synthetics. By contrast, Xenomorphs' more advanced physiology resulted them doing their same exclusively to quickly replenish their strengths after strenous activities.

Life Cycle

As with Xenomorphs, Neomorphs possess a distinct endoparasitic lifecycle.

Neomorphic Egg Sack

Pollution by Chemical A0-3959X.91 – 15 David 8 caused on Paradise aka. Planet 4 produced clusters of first Neomorph Egg Sacs. Each sac appear as small, spherical black fungus which will release a cloud of microscopic spores (motes) into the air.

Neomorph Motes

Neomorph Motes are a cluster of spore-like motes that conglomerate into an airborne mass guided by a rudimentary hive intelligence. Upon being released, they fly to locate and enter nearby host organism through any open orifice — such as the nostrils or ear canal.

Bloodbursters and Adulthood

Upon successfully entering a host, the Motes burrow into their body in order to inject the mutagenic substance they carry into the bloodstream via their ovipositors. Just as Xenomorphs' Plagiarus praepotens triggered the growth of would-be chestburster inside a host this substance triggered the growth of would-be Neomorph Bloodburster. In this case, the Bloodburster started off as a small tumor within a vein or arterial wall outright as the substance rewrite the host's DNA specifically for such purpose, which then grow in matter of seconds before violently erupting from the host's body in fashion akin to Xenomorph Chestburster, although the exact point of emergence varies depending on how the host was infected. For instance, should the spore entered the ear, it will bursts out of the host's head.

Initially, the creature is born with arms and legs and moves in a quadrupedal manner, reminiscent of a Runner, but as they grow, the Neomorph adopts a bipedal stance. The creature has pale whitish-gray skin with a somewhat translucent appearance, attributes that resemble those of a Hammerpede. The Neomorph features a fleshy tail tipped with spikes, which can be used as a devastating slashing and battering weapon, and a large number of silvery fangs in their mouth, which appears circular when closed. Notably, individual Neomorphs appear to display physical variance. For instance, one of the creatures featured a pair of sharp, bony dorsal spikes on their back that assisted them in breaking out of their host, whereas the other individual encountered lacked these features. Their blood is thick and yellow in color, but notably not acidic.

Unlike a typical Xenomorph, Neomorphs do not possess an extendable inner jaw which can be used to attack. Also, while the teeth of a Xenomorph's outer jaws are usually visible, a Neomorph's jawline is nearly invisible when closed.

Neomorphs who grew past Bloodburster stage in matter of hours yet still maintained quadrupedal stance are referred as Neophyte, that grew from 1.2-1.8 metres tall. Their aggressiveness, which initially a form of self-defense upon birth, now driven by the voracious desire to feed. Neophytes are also tenacious enough to challenge multiple armed humans. They retain their behavior until adulthood.

Adult Neomorphs, having reached a rough height of 2.1 metres or more. At this point, their bulbous head have grown into a fully elongated, pointed shape, and adopted a bipedal stance.

In Alien: The Roleplaying Game, studies conducted by Ministry of Space Security in recreating Neomorphs as part of Darkstar Program revealed the creatures had an incredibly short lifespan; a Neomorph would die within 24 hours of its birth and its corpse would spawn new Egg Sacks upon being exposed with fungus, restarting the cycle.
