antagonists

In keeping with nonpolluting policies of Jurassic Park, these lightweight electric Land Cruisers have been specially built for us by Toyota in Osaka. Eventually we hope to drive among the animals – just as they do in African game parks – but, for now, sit back and enjoy the self-guided tour. And by the way, we can hear you back here.

Isn't this extraordinary? Especially on a misty day, these plants really contribute to the prehistoric atmosphere. These are authentic Jurassic ferns, of course.

Edward Regis, often called Ed Regis, is a minor antagonist in Michael Crichton's 1990 horror techno-thriller novel Jurassic Park.

He is a polite yet nervous employee at the Jurassic Park who works as a public relations manager. During the 1989 visit on Isla Nublar, he is tasked with taking care of Lex and Tim Murphy, much to his displeasure, viewing it as beneath him. Despite this, he remains polite and playful towards the guests, up until he finally snaps seeing Rexy touch the fence without being electrified, at which point he runs away and abandons kids. His cowardice eventually leads to losing the track of everyone else and getting hunted down by Juvenile Tyrannosaurus.

Appearance

Ed Regis had red hair visible under his Mets baseball cap and wore a yellow slicker.

Personality

In controlled conditions, Ed Regis was cheerful, polite, laidback, sophisticated, playful and always wore a smile, which others found annoying. Throughout the tour, the man introduced and explained every detail, from dinosaurs through Land Cruisers and how the staff operated to handpicked authentic flora. He felt degraded watching over his boss' grandchildren, but he was nonetheless professional enough not to let his negativity slip into his behavior and even played pickle with Lex. To be honest, his position made him a busy man having to reconcile relations with PR firms in San Francisco and London, and agencies in New York and Tokyo, especially given that he was given no respect by others; thus, he was under a lot of stress during the events of Isla Nublar incident.

Ed Regis was far from being anywhere near as amoral or ruthless as John Hammond; while the latter paid no mind to the lives lost in the construction of the ancient preserve beyond the costs and exhibited stern, cold-hearted attitude towards human life, the manager was quite nervous when confronted about the true nature of the park and struggled to lie convincingly. He appeared to respect the dinosaurs and admired them, as long as they remained within their enclosures, encouraging Lex to enjoy the tour in spite of her complaining, and prompted Alan Grant to stop squeezing a fragile chick of a Velociraptor. Nonetheless, he bore witness to mangled bodies of prehistoric reptiles' victims, so he had an understandable fear of them, particularly the carnivores, so he felt much stronger panic before Tyrannosaurus.

History

A certain rainy night in January 1989, Ed Regis entered a clinic in a fishing village Bahía Anasco on the west coast of Costa Rica, with two men carrying a boy no older than eighteen to a visiting physician dr. Bobbie Carter, explaining they could not cross the mountains in such a bad weather. As the woman examined the patient, she saw large mauling injuries on his torso and leg, as well as shoulder with bones sticking out, which Regis tried to pass off as wounds caused by the backhoes, but the doctor did not believe him, especially because of how nervous he was. Despite the treatment, the man puked a large portion of his blood and died in front of them, so his crew took him away to a helicopter.

Seven months later, after John Hammond brings his visitors on Isla Nublar, Ed Regis opens the door of a chopper and cheerfully welcomes them. He and his boss watched their wonder at the sight of the living apatosaurs moving gracefully, after which they followed the manager to a building. While the visitors were adjusting to the new environment, Ed Regis brought Alexis and Tim Murphies, much to Gennaro's outburst of rage. The sibling were nervous, so the manager introduced them to everyone, although Tim paid him no mind. However, privately in his thoughts, the red-haired man was upset about being a babysitter, with too many responsibilities to be anyone's guide.

He introduced the visitors to John Arnold, Robert Muldoon and Henry Wu, who gave a lengthy explanation about the dinosaur cloning process. When Grant squeezed the Baby Velociraptor's tail, Ed grew annoyed and told him to stop. Although the grown variants were not meant to be viewed by the audience just yet, the visitors went off to see dromaeosaur paddock, with Ed accompanying the kids in a Land Cruiser, also playfully interrupting Gennaro's rant about Malcolm's speeches. He also confirmed that Dilophosaurus is indeed venomous and told Tim that the Les Gigantes restaurant is not opening until November.

Evening came and the Land Cruisers stopped, unable to contact the control room. Through the binoculars, Lex spotted Velociraptors sneaking into a boat leaving for the mainland, which shocked Malcolm, Grant and Regis. A tropical storm has severed the radio connection, although the Land Cruisers were able to restart. However, lights on the road went out, due to power blackout on the perimeter caused by Dennis Nedry, and line halted at Tyrannosaur Paddock.

Tim saw Big Rex behind the foliage thanks to night vision goggles and, to his horror, saw the animal grip the fence. Regis noticed that as well, and after a few moments of internal horror, urinated in his trousers and ran off to the woods, tripping. Half an hour of hiding among the boulders on the slope of the hill, he could once again think clearly and began to regret abandoning the kids, contemplating whether to go back or not, considering that he would not get away regardless, as Hammond would find out eventually, only to realize that his body was tingling due to leeches sucking up his body fluids, that he got from falling over, distracted by what crewmen say about the creatures crawling up people's orifices.

He heard Lex call out dr. Grant's name, which brought Regis back to his senses. However, when he got back to the spot where the Land Cruisers were, he did not see any whatsoever, realizing that they must up the hill. However, the girl stopped talking, which made him think that something must have happened to her, and that he was better off not following her voice, so he turned around, heading for the Visitor Center.

The jungle went silent, and Ed Regis pressed himself against the trunk of a large tree, keeping as still as possible. Juvenile Tyrannosaurus was walking down the road and sniffing out for him. When it disappeared, the local fauna once again began to emit sounds, which made the man relax. Then the creature knocked him on the floor, but he tried to scare it off by shouting and holding out his arms in the air, even hitting it in the face. Perplexed, T. rex allowed him to get up, only to topple him over again, and again. Eventually, it pounced on him and killed him, Ed's high-pitched scream filling the area, much to Alan's, Tim's and Lex's horrors, with the trio running off.

An hour later, Robert Muldoon and Donald Gennaro found Regis' severed calf.

Towards the end of the novel, Hammond complained about how ill-suited Ed Regis was for the job.
